Hackney Pirates to be precise. Like Cedya. Who is 10 and from London. Her T-shirt is about being attacked by fire dragons and flying cars.

And her design is just one in a range of sixteen beautiful T-shirts produced by the Hackney Pirates, an innovative learning project that develops literacy by giving children one to one attention in an unconventional learning environment.
The children are referred by teachers who recognise the enormous potential of these gifted young people that could be realised and encouraged with the benefit of extra attention beyond the school gates.

At the heart of the project lies the idea that learning should be an adventure and a belief in the power of one-to-one attention as a hugely powerful educational tool. Volunteers not only help young pirates with homework and reading but use their creativity and talents to work alongside the pirates making professionally produced creative products like books, T-shirts and websites that become real, tangible results of everyone’s efforts and develop the children’s’ writing alongside real working skills.

The ‘Young Pirate Apprentice’ T shirt project has seen children aged 9-12 working together not just on the design of t-shirts but on market research and planning and developing the entire sales and marketing strategy.

Our gift for Christmas: monstrous silliness

We love Christmas here at Monster Threads. But for all the wrong reasons…

Here are some of them:

Along with Halloween, it’s the best time of the year for our little monsters. Crocopanda even writes to Santa Claus, asking for a cool gift for Christmas! The rest just exchange gifts and make noise. It’s a perfect opportunity for them to sing and dance and play, just like little kids do.
It’s choir time! In any other part of the year, the sight of serious looking adults singing carols joyfully on the streets of Newcastle would make us wonder what the hell is going on. Not at Christmas though…
Silliness is all the rage, especially when it comes to presents. A gift for Christmas does not have to be a valuable object. A silly girly tee or a funky mousemat for your lovely sister will do.
Fashionistas have one reason more to love Christmas, with all these jewels and bags available at reasonable prices.
Mince pie, pudding, turkey, and, and, and…Who said that British food isn’t great?
TV specials and classics make our heart beat. Doctor Who, Top of the Pops and Only Fools and Horses on the same day! And of course the Queen’s speech.
Mums have their own love and hate relationship with Christmas. They are busy with cooking and Christmas tree decorating and the rest. But on the other hand that’s the only day in the year their kids behave. Maybe that’s their own gift for Christmas…

Well, ok, some of us hate this day more than Cheryl Cole hates Simon Cowell. It’s a bit mawkish, it makes us feel older and sometimes it can be stressing too. After all, it’s not that easy to pick a gift for Christmas for your partner or your best friend. But that’s the point – we enjoy it cause it’s painful…

7 Reasons We Love Winter

Winter is just around the corner, and it’s a great opportunity for Monster Threads to pay tribute to a season that we literally love to hate.

We love it cause it’s a good excuse for fashion aficionados to wear their favourite vests, jumpers and hoodies. But we also hate it a bit, cause it’s not a tee-friendly season! Well, there’s is no perfection, not even in fashion…

In a nutshell, this is why we love late November, adore December, enjoy January and can’t wait for February:

Let’s face it, for fashionistas winter apparel is the biggest challenge of all. Yes, coats, hoodies, scarves, shoals, gloves and sundry are necessary to protect us from the chilly British weather. But they also look nice on us! There are thousands of combinations that you can make with all these clothes. If you don’t agree, just check Keira Knightley. Doesn’t she look uber-cute?
Yes, we know, it’s cold outside. Well, enjoy it! That’s why most people prefer to spend time at home in the winter. Or go to the movies. Let’s look at the bright side of life. It’s time for hugs!
It’s also time for melancholy, November Rain and strolls in the park with our bicycles.
You know it’s winter when you hear Last Christmas on the radio. Or when you see snow out of your window. Or when you don’t have to go to school cause it’s snowing…
Cold weather makes us a bit lazier than usual, which is not a bad thing after all. If you don’t believe us, check out these lovely owls!
For some odd reason, British parks are more romantic than usual at this part of the year. No matter whether you are strolling around in Hyde Park or chilling out at Leazes Park, you can easily spot dozens of couples protecting each other from the cold with tender kisses.
Last but not least, Dancing on Ice is back on track! ’Nuff said…
